Michele Ozumba to speak at 7th Annual Luncheon

MICHELE OZUMBA, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Women’s Funding Network, will be the keynote speaker at the Women’s Fund annual luncheon on November 28. From her perspective as head of an international women’s funding alliance, she will talk about the power of women’s collective giving.

The Women’s Funding Network provides training and networking for more than 160 national and international organizations, such as ours, that fund women’s initiatives with more than $65 million a year. In addition, WFN supplies assessment tools such as “Making the Case,” an online program that we use to measure the social change impact of our grants.

Michele is also very familiar with one of our key issues - teen pregnancy. Before joining the Women’s Funding Network in May 2011, Michele spent 10 years at the helm of the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. She has been on the boards of the National Teen Network and the National Advisory Council on Sexual Health. Michele was recently named to Fast Company Magazine’s "The League of Extraordinary Women." Michele and over 60 smart, fearless and inspiring female leaders were selected for successfully leveraging their work to solve real world issues.

Please plan to join us on Wednesday, November 28 for our 7th Annual Luncheon, presented by Wake Forest Baptist Health. The lunch will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Benton Convention Center. Our new grantees will be announced at the lunch and we will be issuing a report on the first four years of The Fund’s grant making and the success of our grantees in improving the lives of women and girls in Forsyth County. Admission to the luncheon is $25. Invitations will be mailed and online registration will open in late October.

Help Make the Luncheon a Success

WE HAVE SET AGGRESSIVE STRETCH GOALS for luncheon sponsorships and attendance this year and we hope you will help us meet these goals. Corporate and individual sponsorships help us to fund the luncheon as well as our grants and programs.

Please consider approaching your membership group or employer with the opportunity to become a luncheon sponsor. Sponsorship levels are associated with varying tiers of benefits, from reserved tables to recognition in promotional materials.

Download the sponsorship form which includes detailed information about the benefits of each sponsorship level.

Grant Review is Underway

OUR ANNUAL GRANT MAKING PROCESS is well underway. Proposals have been received and are currently being reviewed by The Women's Fund members who have volunteered to serve on the Grant Review Committee. Grant Review Committee members will be conducting site visits over the course of the next few weeks and will then meet in mid-September to determine which proposals will move forward to the membership. Summaries outlining each proposal and ballots for voting will be issued to all members at the end of September.

The membership voting period will run from October 1 to 21. Our annual member grant discussion events will take place on October 10, so save the date for that popular event (there will be a lunch time and after work session offered). This meeting offers a great opportunity to discuss and evaluate the grant proposals with other members. Group leaders are especially encouraged to attend this meeting, so that they can in turn share the discussion with their teams as they evaluate the proposals. As, always, our new grantees will be announced at our annual luncheon.

Women's Emerging Leadership Program

WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE that the next Women's Emerging Leadership Program will be offered by HandsOn Northwest North Carolina this fall. This program is targeted to mid level female professionals currently employed by nonprofits serving Forsyth and surrounding counties.

The Women's Emerging Leadership Program is a ten month program consisting of two components: an intensive Leadership Essentials for Women workshop and enrollment in the Nonprofit Essentials Program, a series of skill building classes jointly sponsored by HandsOn NWNC and Wake Forest University’s Institute for Public Engagement.

This program was piloted with funding from a grassroots grant from The Women's Fund in 2009 and we are thrilled that it has become a regular program offering from HandsOn.

The application deadline for this program is Friday, August 31, 2012.

Honor the Special Women in Your Life

to honor the women who have most inspired and influenced your commitment to service and purpose. Make a gift to The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem in honor or in memory of your mom, mentor, sister, or friend.

Tribute gifts to the Women’s Fund help to improve the lives of women and children in Forsyth County. Recently our grants have provided enrichment activities and support services for at-risk girls and young women, helped childcare professionals pursue higher degrees in early childhood education, and helped provide professional attire and mentoring for disadvantaged women who wish to obtain and maintain employment.

Your honoree will receive a special card from The Women’s Fund letting her know that a tribute gift has been made in her honor. With a gift of $50 or more, you and your honoree will both be recognized in the program at the annual Women’s Fund Luncheon in November.
